After Hurricane Irene and subsequent storms, there have been an unusual number of fish--especially smaller fish--that have gone belly up in our lake. We have been told that this is due to the unfortuante confluence of sediment washed into the lake and violent wave actions. Apparently, water choked with sediment particles is inhaled by fish as they swim and breathe. This uptake of small particles irritates the gill structure of fish and limits their capacity to absorb oxygen: the result is suffication. In addition, strong winds and wave action also sweep smaller fish from their safe habitat and cause fatalities. The lake will recover in time, but nature isn't always gentle nor caring.
