Green Up Vermont Day At LSC, Wells & Poultney 2026 (2 May 2026)

Hello LSC, and residents of Wells & Poultney,

Saturday, May 2nd is Green Up Vermont Day.

Green Up Vermont is a state-wide volunteer cleanup day of Vermont's roads and waterways.

As Green Up Vermont's website says:

"We know it isn’t your litter but Vermont needs our help to be beautiful!"

We've had FANTASTIC turnouts over the past several years, with volunteers signing up to cover every road around the lake, and additional roads in Wells & Poultney - and we're looking to do it again this year. You can check out a quick recap, and see lots of photos from our volunteers of our 2025 Green UP Vermont Day here.

Would you like to volunteer for Green Up Vermont Day?

If so, email us at info@lakestcatherine.org, or contact us on Facebook, and let us know the roads (or sections of roads) you'd like to work on, and we'll add you to our volunteer map (see below). You can also visit the Wells or Poultney Town Halls to pick up bags, and let them know where you'll work.

Roads highlighted in blue on the map indicate that the road (or section of road) is being covered by a volunteer. We'll do our best to coordinate the efforts so we all know what areas are covered, and which areas need volunteers.

Wells:

As we did last year, in coordination with the Town of Wells, we will be hosting a brief kickoff to the day at the Wells Lakeside Park on Little Lake at 8 AM that morning. Please stop in to pick up Green Up bags, fuel up on coffee and muffins from the Wells Country Store to get energized for the day, and meet your fellow volunteers, or stop in to see us to talk about the lake! Green Up Bags are available now at the Town Hall, and will be available at the Park that morning. Also, the Wells Village Library will have high-visibility vests and grabber reacher tools to borrow.

Poultney:

Green Up Day bags are currently available at the Town Hall. If Poultney plans a meetup or event, we'll let you know.

So, let us know if you'd like to participate and where you'll do your clean up, and we'll add your area to the map. We'll keep the map up-to-date here, and on our website Calendar, on the May 2nd Green Up Vermont Day event. You can view that here: 2026 Green Up Vermont Day Event.

Paddling Among Living Lands and Waters (25 May 2026)

The Vermont Land Trust has scheduled a paddle on Little Lake on May 25th, 2026 from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM.

Here is the description of the paddle:

"Experience Lake St. Catherine’s sister, Little Lake, from a new perspective during this educational community paddle. We’ll explore the lake’s numerous natural communities keeping our eyes out for diverse plant and animal species. Along the way, we’ll cover the greater context as well: from bedrock and post-glacial geology to human history and lake structure and dynamics. Led by plant ecologist and retired biology professor Jim Graves and VLT Project Director, Pamela Burlingame this event is open to all knowledge and skill levels and combines gentle recreation with an engaging introduction to the natural history of this beautiful, shared lake resource."

The 14th Annual LSCA Boat Parade (4 Jul 2026)

The 14th Annual LSCA Boat Parade will be on Saturday, July 4th at 1 PM.

We all know how fun it is to watch the boat parade, but it's even more fun to be part of it!

As we did last year, we'll take photos of all participants, and we'll have a lake-wide online vote to decide the winner.

We'll have more details and will open signups to participate as we get closer to the event.

2026 LoonCount on LSC (18 Jul 2026)

On the third Saturday in July of every year, LoonCount volunteers take to the water to count loons. It’s the single most effective way for Vermont Center for EcoStudies (VCE) to document and track breeding loons across the state.

From VCE's webpage:

"Each year on a single day on the third Saturday of July, VCE and our volunteers cover more than 160 lakes and ponds statewide. It’s the single most effective way for VCE to document and track breeding loons across the state. Survey a lake — or if you’ve got time, a few — for one hour on that Saturday."

So, we're looking to coordinate volunteers around the lake to count all the loons we see on the lake between 8 AM - 9 AM on Saturday, July 18th.

If you'd like to participate, please observe your area, or head out onto the lake between 8 AM - 9 AM on July 19th, and note what you observe, where, and at what time. We'll create a post on our Facebook page that morning on which you can add your observations (or you can email us at info@lakestcatherine.org). We'll then gather all the reports and send that info over to Eric and Eloise at VCE.
